About Our Work

Shari's Statement

As an artist I draw upon life’s experiences, human and animal psyche, elements of backstage theatre, costumes, fantasy and humor for inspiration.

I tend to create series or bodies of works using the figure, such as Remarkable Women, Odd Women, Egos, In and currently, The Bunni. The Bunni has become my story teller; he or she is in a mood or communicating a specific experience. They are metaphorical messengers and they relate to us easily. They beg for us to look at ourselves and find humor in the serious.

The Ego series continues with the addition of Alter Egos. Using my most favored mono-print method of filling a space with solid color and wiping away the figure, giant heads emerge. They are our complexities as humans. How big or small are we? Layers of paint, texture, line, color and the occasional word or phrase, lure the spectator inward; allowing for delicious exploration. The imagery pushes back though. A sense of whimsy intertwined with an underlying darkness nags at its viewer, leaving each individual to draw their own conclusions.

The tools I use most for two dimensional expression are paint, graphite, mixed media, such as photo-transfers and airbrush on paper, canvas or board. I tend to eliminate most distractions surrounding the player. Areas of color or lack of color allow the eye to focus on the moment. Each piece stands strong on its own, but they excite each other when exhibited together.

Artrageous Adventures

with Art In Mind

I began teaching in 1996 in Baltimore MD. I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1992, with a major in painting and a minor in Art History. This is my sixth year teaching privately in Rhode Island. I have enjoyed running Artrageous Adventures after school art enrichment at Stony Lane and Fishing Cove Elementary and will soon begin the same program at Hamilton Elementary.

My goal is to foster each child’s individual creativity, while introducing them to the works of many wonderful artists and art movements throughout history. We explore media such as collage, painting, printmaking, drawing and sculpture. Small class size allows for age appropriate guidance and technique acquisition as younger and older children work side by side. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace and will be given additional projects as needed.

After a great visit with Dacia Gallery, on our way to another NYC gallery, I stepped into a slight indent in the road and rolled my ankle. Today it is October 24th, I am in my fourth week of healing. This is a very long road. WIth alot more ahead. I am trying to start to find ways to stay creative. The pain is somewhat less and I can focus on more than just that for about an hour at a time. Still not able to stand for any length of time as it hurts and one foot is not convenient. I will continue to slowly add more to this page.
